And we have......

Broccoli!!!!  Day 4
I planted 4 broccoli plants, 3 have sprouted.  This is one of them, the
biggest one.  This was planted on 2/6 and sprouted on 2/9.  What
a cutie, huh??

  1. Compare the shape of the cotyledon to those of the lettuce. This is a brassica, and you can already tell by that difference. You will see the same, leaf structure on radish, turnip, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts - even though the mature plants are all very different, the cotyledons tell an important story. One of the reasons gardeners like to plant in rows is because it's easier to identify which plants to leave and which plants to weed out, and recognizing the shape of the cotyledon makes it easy to do as soon as possible, before the weeds get big and more problematic.
