Lettuce-Day 16 and 20 Comparison

Transplant day.  I wanted to do a side by side pic so you can see how much it has
grown in 4 days and how well it has recovered from root damage and overhandling.
4 days after transplanting.

Lettuce, Broccoli, Tomato

This is Day 20 for this lettuce plant.  I am amazed at how this plant has recovered so quickly from all the stress I have put it through.  It has been transplanted 3 times, had half it's roots broken off once and over-fed.  It seems that none of this has affected it's growth in the least.  Compare this picture with the one taken 4 days ago.
The other lettuce plants.  Not doing as well as the one above.  I'm still holding out hope that they will get big and healthy!!

Broccoli plants.  This is 2 of the 3.  They are on Day 10.  Lookin good so far!!!

Tomato plant.  See how it's leaning over?  The one behind it is doing the same thing.  I'll have to consult my tomato expert friends over on GardenWeb and see what they think!!

Day 15

Day 15

This is Day 8 for all of these except the bottom right.  That
one is Day 15 also.  Its not growing as quickly as the others
but it seems like it's doing fine.

Lettuce plants--Day 13

These are the two biggest plants.  The true leaf has really
taken off and grown quickly.
Smaller plant but doing well.

First "true" leaf

Two of my lettuce plants finally have their first "true" leaf.  This is one of them.  When I left for work this morning, it was still closed.  When I came home, I found it like this.  Happiness!!  You cant tell in the picture but its getting ready to get open the 2nd leaf.  The first one grew and opened in just a few days.

Leggy plants again?? Day 3, Batch 2

These plants just sprouted yesterday.
This is Day 3 for my 2nd batch of lettuce.  I have them really
close to the light source but it seems maybe not close enough?
Looks like they may be going leggy again.

#2--still has seed shell on it

#3--Seed leaves are starting to open

This is a picture of the first batch to show the size of the plant
on Day 5 compared to the size of batch #2 on Day 3.  These
plants grew VERY quickly--about 1 1/2" over night due to
insufficient light.

Lettuce--Batch #2 has sprouted!

Planted a 2nd round of lettuce on 2/3/12.  This is Day 2 and 3 of the 6 plants have sprouted.  Just barely but I can see them!!!

Let the digging begin!!!

First garden plot.  Not very big but I want to start small and see how
things will go before I dig up my whole yard!

Another view
Ended up with 3 bags of grass/weeds after digging up just that small
area.

New lighting!!

I've had this shop light in my attic since we bought the house 5 years ago.  I took it down, cleaned it up and hung it from my ceiling.  The lamp behind it probably wont stay.

Day 8 & 9 Comparison-true leaf

Same plant, 24 hours later.  Notice how much
the true leaf has grown overnight.
Photo taken yesterday morning to show first
true leaf.

First true leaf 24 hours later
Again--first true leaf.

Day 8

This is Day 8. After replanting them at an angle a couple of days ago and burying them up to the cotyledons, this is what I have. They are still growing but slower this time. They also have direct light on them but I'm sure the light isnt as strong as they need. This is the biggest one of the 5. Yesterday the seed leaves were more open. I noticed today they have closed again. Not sure what this means. Can you see the little "nub" at the base of the stem? The beginning of the first true leaves? There is only one--again--not sure what this means.

This one is probably the prettiest of them all :) No nub that I can see though.

2nd biggest one--also has a nub.

Smallest plant. The seed leaves are starting to open more but its not growing as quickly as the others.

First sprouts!!

So, I decided to grow my own vegetables.  This blog will be about my planting and growing experience, and if everything goes well, my harvesting experience also!!  I'll post pictures frequently so you can watch them grow too :)

I decided to start with lettuce and tomatoes since they do well indoors and in containers.  Soon I'll be preparing my garden so they can finish growing outside where they belong :)

Below are pictures of my lettuce plants.  I have 6 growing.  I planted 24 total but not all of them are germinating.  Hopefully its not too late for them but I'm happy either way because I have a few that are happy and healthy so far :)

Here are 3 of them.  They were planted on January 27th.  They're already about 2" tall and this is only day 5!!  The one on the right has started to split at the top.  My theory is that this will be the first set of leaves :)

After talking to other gardeners, I was told these plants were not growing correctly, most likely due to insufficient lighting.  I immediately placed lights on them and had to replant a couple of times but they seem to be doing much better now.
